Speed Cameras UK – Free Speed Camera Location Database

Truvelo Safety CameraSpeedCamerasUK.com is the UK's largest free online speed camera database, with over 4,000 fixed and mobile speed camera locations recorded across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The database has been built and maintained since 2000 with the help of UK motorists, making it one of the longest-running and most comprehensive speed camera resources available.

Whether you want to check for speed cameras on a familiar route, learn about a camera type you have spotted, understand your options after receiving a speeding fine, or find the right speed camera detector for your vehicle - this site covers it all in one place.

UK Speed Camera Database

Our speed camera database lists over 4,000 speed camera locations submitted by UK motorists. Each entry records the road, location, direction and camera type where known. You can browse by region - from Greater London and the South East to Scotland and Northern Ireland - or go straight to your county. If you spot a camera that is not yet listed, you can submit a new speed camera location to help other motorists.

The database covers fixed cameras including Gatso, Truvelo and SPECS average speed cameras, as well as mobile camera sites and newer systems such as HADECS 3 on smart motorways. All locations are free to view with no registration required.

Types of Speed Camera in the UK

Understanding the different speed camera types in use across the UK can help you recognise what you are looking at on the road. The most common types include:

  • Gatso - the UK's most familiar rear-facing radar camera, yellow and box-shaped, found on both urban roads and dual carriageways.
  • SPECS - average speed cameras that measure your speed between two or more points, often used in roadworks and on A-roads.
  • HADECS 3 - a newer system deployed on smart motorways including sections of the M25, M1 and M6, monitoring multiple lanes simultaneously.
  • Truvelo - a forward-facing camera that photographs the driver's face; often found in 30mph zones.
  • Mobile speed cameras - operated from marked or unmarked vehicles at varying locations throughout the UK.

See the full speed camera types guide for descriptions and photographs of all 14 camera systems covered on this site.

Speeding Fines - What Happens If You Are Caught?

If a speed camera catches you exceeding the limit, you will typically receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) within 14 days. The standard fixed penalty is a £100 fine and three penalty points on your licence, though more serious cases can result in a court summons and a much larger fine - potentially up to 175% of your weekly income.

Our speeding fines guide explains the penalty bands, when a speed awareness course may be offered instead of points, and how a motoring solicitor could help if you wish to contest a charge.

Speed Camera Detectors and Sat Navs

If you want advance warning of speed cameras while driving, the two most practical options are a dedicated speed camera detector or a sat nav with speed camera data. Both are legal to use in the UK, provided the device does not actively jam or interfere with camera equipment. Read more about the legal position here.

Our speed camera detector guide compares the main types of device and explains how they work, and you can browse current models in our detector shop. We also cover dash cams and smartphone apps for those who prefer a multi-function approach.

Speed Camera FAQs

Not sure whether a camera you passed was working? Wondering what the flash pattern means for a Gatso, or whether SPECS cameras work at night? Our speed camera FAQ section answers the most common questions from UK motorists, including questions specifically about speed camera detectors.
